Saw this tip on an email list.

1) Download the free Video Lan Client and install it. This will become your DVD player. Be aware that it ignores region codes on DVDs--you can play PAL, NTSC, etc.

2) To capture video from the DVD, install a shareware program (please let me know if you are aware of a free or open source program) known as FRAPS. FRAPS costs $37.

3) Run FRAPS and click on the MOVIE tab to select what folder you will save your video captures to.

4) Start the DVD. WHen you get to the scene you want to capture, press the F9 key on your keyboard. When the scene is over, press F9. Note that you can use F10 to capture still images in the same way.
