Open source causes a complete new pattern of collaboration to emerge and "flattening" of the world to the extent that for-profit companies are no longer necessary. The Download a la Mode Feature Series appears in its entirety below including some new ideas for future articles. You will also find TechTips podcasts (digital audio) further down on this page. Several of the articles will be appearing in print and online magazines, but you have the opportunity to read them here. They appear from first to most recent in chronological order below:

BACKGROUND
When I started the series in 1999, I did it because
I hated the idea of doing workshops at a regional education service
center, and folks just wouldn't have access to the software when they
arrived back in their classrooms. The freeware/shareware software I
pointed to made it easier for those teachers. I've always felt like I
was scrounging around, wading through zillions of advertising in endless
pop-up windows...until I finally found the right piece of software that
would work, that would do just the right things.
Free, open source software is now a reality. If a teacher never wanted to use Windows or Mac OS, or even if they did, they would have access to a host of programs that are free, open source. While it's unfortunate that school districts aren't taking advantage of these FOSS, it's enough to know that it's out there. I was pleased to read this Couros Blog entry on how open source software is saving schools money. They're actually doing in Montana what I advocated doing in this blog entry.
- Open Source Boondoggle?

I'm excited about the work that reflecting on these issues has brought about. I'm hoping that we can make a Free, Open Source Software (FOSS) Special Interest Group a reality here in Texas as part of the Texas Computer Education Association (TCEA).
