Welcome to the Digital Storytelling Academy Outline! Digital storytelling encompasses a wide variety of approaches, including personal narratives.
Course Objectives
- To provide students with an introduction to the tools of desktop/web-based storytelling in a production context.
- To introduce storytelling methodology (point of view, emotional content, dramatic action) into a dialogue about new media content.
- Assist students in completing a project.
- Equip teachers with the tools (installation CDs will be issued at the Academy) they need to empower them to create Digital Stories in their classrooms. To that end, the following tools will work:
- Windows Computers:
- MS PhotoEditor for image editing
- Audacity for audio editing
- MS PhotoStory for “video” editing
- Mac Computers:
- iPhoto for image editing and
- iMovie for video editing.
- Garageband for audio editing
Pre-Academy Work
Participants in the Digital Storytelling Academy should plan to do the following PRIOR to atending the workshop:
- Print and Read a copy of the Digital Storytelling Cookbook?
- Develop a rough draft of a 250 word script (in written/typed format)
- Bring a collection of 12–15 pictures
Schedule
- Be sure to complete a Workshop Feedback Form for each day
First Hour
- Presentation of 7 Elements and Digital Stories to introduce digital storytelling and analyze story elements in prior student work.
- Story Circle to discuss students own project plans in group setting (listen to what this is like).
Second Hour
- Image Editing Hands-on Tutorial
- Preparation and Digitization of Individual Materials including scriptwriting and revision, image selection and storyboarding, scanning and image preparation in video editing program.
- Import image sequence into MS PhotoStory
Third Hour
- Video editing Hands-on Tutorial
- Final Individual Script Review
- Record Voice-overs
- Assemble rough edit in video editing software
